Science FTW! This Feminist Campaign Is Getting More Women Into STEM By Urging Catcallers To Throw In A Couple Chemistry Facts!

The women’s movement has come a long way in the past century, but statistics show that while almost half of U.S. jobs are held by women, they make up only 24 percent of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) workforce. That’s why there’s an awesome new campaign that’s exposing women to science in an innovative way: encouraging catcallers to throw in some chemistry facts along with their lewd comments.

Wow. This is a major step in the right direction for the scientific community!

The program is called Let Her Know, and it’s an international initiative to bring the STEM workforce into the 21st century by exposing more women to the awesome world of science. Ads urging catcallers to toss a little science in with their crass jeering are showing up in areas such as construction sites, subways, and in dark alleyways, where high concentrations of street harassment take place. Here are just a few examples:

Incredible! Now whenever women are degraded by men shouting at them from their cars or wolf-whistled at while jogging, they might just take the first step along the path to a STEM career.

Science for the win! With Let Het Know helping to recruit tomorrow’s female chemists, engineers, and mathematicians, more and more scientific breakthroughs will be made by women in the coming decades. And that’s pretty remarkable.
